RESIST EARTHQUAKES MONUMENT:
The "Resist Earthquakes Monument" is usually dubbed the 1976 Earthquake Memorial as it commemorates the devastating eartquake that shook these north-eastern regions of  the Peoples Republic China shortly before the demise of "Great Helmsman" Mao Zedong. The earthquake, also known as Tangshan Quake after its epicenter, laid waste the nearby city of Tangshan and did great damage in Tianjin, Beijing and surrounding regions. An estimated 460.000 lives were lost, although the true number of dead and injured will likely never be revealed. This devastating shock, followed briefly after by the death of the father of the Nation is an event engraved in the collective memory of all families who lived in the region at the time. It was a national tragedy which is still commemorated in the center of the city of Tianjin.

TIANJIN CITY MOSQUE:
The Tianjin City is certainly not the only Mosque (Qinghzen Si) in Tianjin City but it is the main and most historic Temple of Islam in the city. Originally constructed during the early Qing Dynasty Era (1644 AD - 1911 AD), it is only second to the Confucius Temple (Wen Miao). Except for its forceed closure and near abondonement during the Cultural Revolution Era (1966 - 1976) the Mosque has been operational ever since.  Today, the Temple Complex covers 5000 square meters and consists of four main structures, the Screen Wall, the Archway, the (Main) Prayer Hall and the Preaching Hall.
Today's Tianjin City Mosque is not an official tourist attraction, and as an active place of worship mass tourism is not encouraged. Visitors are allowed to dwell the Temple grounds and surrounding gardens but have no access to the prayer hall itself. Officially no visitors are allowed, but if you are lucky and dressed and behaved appropriately (shut off your cell phone for instance) you may have the chance to view the interiors.
Except for its historical significance, the Tianjin City Mosque is noted for its surrounding Hutong. Although these have undergone a thorough commercial make over, the hutong survive as a small and close-knit community amid the swelling sea of concrete and highrise around it.

As mentioned, there are several other Mosques in Tianjin city, all of them much more modern and built in a middle-eastern inspired style. Find them in various districts of town (See Listing).

MONASTERY OF GREAT COMPASSION (Dabei Yuan):
The Buddhist Monastery of Great Compassion is another one of the cities large and ancient preserved temples. Dabei Buddhist Monastery has an especially large significance in Chinese History, as during its early history it was the Temple where the ashes of the Holy Monk Xuanzang (Life: 602 AD – 664 AD) keeper of the Great Goose Pagoda (Dacien Si) of Chang'An (Xi'An), were kept. Where the ashes went since is unclear.
Opinions differ on the earliest origins of the Temple Complex. Some say that the first Temple was built between the year 1611 AD and 1644 AD, during the final breakdown of the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD). Official Temple history holds it that the Dabei Monastery was first established in the year 1658 AD shortly after the take-over by the Manchu who established the last feudal Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty (1644 AD - 1911 AD).  Expanded in the year 1940 and closed during the Cultural Revolution Era (1976 AD - 1977 AD) when all religious activities and many other activities were banned, the Dabei Monastery was among the first Temple Complexes in the nation to be renovated. Re-opened in 1980 AD, it is a very popular tourist destination as well as an active place of worship.

No. 2 Workers Cultural Palace (Di Er Gongren Wenhua)
Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD) which was a flowering period of (Neo) Confucianism.  Having been shut down during the infamous "Cultural Revolution" Era (1966 AD - 1976 AD officially) the Temple suffered many years of neglect. The Tianjin Confucius Temple was only reopened as late as in the year 1993, long after many other temples in Beijing and around the Nation. Today Confucius Temple is the most popular historic landmark of the modern city, offering physical and spiritual reprieve to both local townsfolk and the ever visiting national or international tourists.

As one of the oldest structures it can be found in the "old city" section, located at Dongmen Nei Dajie on the west bank of the Beiyun River (Beiyun He') and two blocks due north-east of Guangdong Guild Hall.
Almost around the corner are the popular Drum Tower and Drum Tower commercial street (Gulou Dajie').
Address: No.1 Dongmen Nei Dajie.
