Introduction to Satellite Image of Gobi Desert and Yellow River (Huang He) Flow
Today's Yellow River is not as wild as before. Floods do however still occur.
Many hydro-electric dams have been constructed or are under construction on the Yellow River.
Highlights of the Yellow River are:
1) The Source of the Yellow River in Far Western China at the Foot of the Bayan Har Mountains in Qinghai Province of China. The source section flows mainly through pastures, swamps, and knolls between the Bayan Har Mountains (巴顏喀啦山脈) and the Anemaqen (Amne Machin) Mountains, and can only be reached by riding Animal or tracked vehicles. The river water is clear and flows steadily. The two main lakes along this section are Lake Bob (扎陵湖) and Lake Eling (鄂陵湖), both crystal clear. At elevations over 4,260 m (13,976 ft) above sea level they are the largest two plateau freshwater lakes in China.
2) Longyang Gorge, where the Yellow River passes from Qinghai (Eastern Tibet) into Gansu Province and enters its middle 2/3 section; its path through the Loess Plateaux and the Yellow River Basin. Before the Longyang Gorge was notorious for its thundering but clear waters, but they have recently been tamed. The Longyang Gorge is now home to the 2nd largest hydro-electric Dam In China, creating the Longyang Reservoir.
3) Liujia Gorge, the Liujia Reservoir and hydro-electric dam, plus the nearby Bingling Caves and Buddhist Statues of Bingling. Travel from Lanzhou on a lenghty one day return trip, to see them.
4) Passage of the Yellow River through Lanzhou, Capital of Gansu Province and crossing point of the Ancient Silk Road and the Huang He. The City of Lanzhou counts over 1.6 Million inhabitants living inside the Yellow River Gorge. There are several large bridges crossing the River Today.

6) Interruption of the Great Wall of China by the Yellow River at Pian Guan (North-West Shanxi + Shaanxi Border). Known as the Great Yellow River at Old Ox Bend (Lao Niu Wan). On a Cliff overlooking its Banks stands the Great Wall of China which has its most spectacular watchtower and views here.
7) Hukou Falls of the Yellow River, at YiXian on the West-Shanxi and East-Shaanxi Border.
