Main Rivers and Waterways of Hebei Province :
Shandong Province is relatively rich in water and therefor rivers, lakes and also reservoirs can be found in relative abundance. The main river of Shandong Province is without a shadow of a doubt the mighty Yellow River (Huanghe), the waters of which having shaped much of the landscape as well as the history of the Province. On  its way from west to east through the Province the great Yellow River passes due north but near enough to the city of Jinan, which is therefor the Capital city of the Province.
Another historicaly and economically crucial waterway in Shandong Province is the (largely) man-made, and highly cultivated and developed "Grand Canal". The so called Grand Canal was indeed Grand and is still recognized as the longest man-made canal in human history. Originally initiated in the Sui Dynasty (581 AD - 618 AD), further developed by succeeding Rulers and Dynasties, eventually completed during the Yuan Dynasty (1271 AD - 1368 AD) and finally enhanced by the Ming (1368 AD - 1644 AD), the Grand Canal was essentially a huge public works project which had the goal of facilitating the transportation of goods, mainly in the northern directions, between the rice rich regions of the Yangzte River Delta and the southern provinces to the north.
When finally completed the Grand Canal connected the city of Beijing to the north, via Tongzhou (District of Beijing) and Tianjin (Prefecture) with the south, thereby cutting all across Shandong Province and leading away into Jiangsu Province more to the south where it meets up with the lakes and many waterways in the reaches of the Yangtze River and Delta.

Today many of the sections of the Grand Canal in Shandong Province are still functional and the Grand Canal is one of the main tourist sights in Shandong Province, falling second only to the great Yellow River.

A Map drawing of the Eurasian continent , parts of North-East Africa and the Middle East in the 19Th Century between 1801 AD and 1900 AD. Labeled seperately is the later Rise of the Empire of Japan in the East.
Included in this Map are the main cities across the continent with their brief histories and events during the 19Th Century. Marked in Colors for clarity are the various colonial and imperialist Nations. As relating to China; special attention is payed to so called Treaty Ports. The First Treaty Ports were forced open by Britain in the year 1841 AD, but counted over 80 in total by the end of the 19Th Century. The most important Treaty Ports in China are marked and described with a short history where the map allows.
